…trains journalists in Warri

Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has charged the media on their role as opinion moulders, saying their importance cannot be overemphasised.

This was disclosed at a one-day capacity building workshop organised for journalists in Warri to improve professional capacity, which Chevron also says, building of lasting partnerships with mediation stakeholders remains part of its core, lasting values to society.

CNL’s General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Mr. Olusoga Oduselu, made the disclosure at the training for journalists of the Warri Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

Odeselu, represented by Chevron’s communications representative Mr. Praise Saheed Akinbola, said, “On behalf of Chevron Nigeria Limited, I am delighted to be here to witness the second segment of the media capacity building programme we are implementing in collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ Warri Chapel.

“We are happy to build on the success of last year’s activity in Asaba where we successfully trained over 30 journalists, who are members of the NUJ Delta State Council, and we are confident that the programme benefited the participants.

“As members of the fourth estate of the realm, your role as agenda-setters and opinion moulders cannot be over-emphasized. I want to thank you for your role in reporting the oil and gas industry and providing effective perspectives to the complex industry operations.

“We continue to partner with the media for the development of society. That is why CNL sponsored the Advanced Writing and Reporting Skills (AWARES) programme in collaboration with Pan Atlantic University, Lagos.

“Over 120 journalists have benefitted from the programme since its inception in 2014. Last year, we also trained over 90 journalists in Lagos, Asaba and Abuja to build the capacity of media practitioners to perform their roles as opinion moulders.

“Through programmes such as AWARES and the Chevron-NUJ capacity building programmes, we help to improve professional capacity and build lasting partnerships with our media stakeholders.

“We also recognize that the success of the larger society invariably translates to success in our business; and we believe it is in our long-term interest to add value to society as we create value for our stakeholders.

Earlier, Mr. Victor Okpomor, chairman, NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, while welcoming participants, thanked CNL for sponsorship of the programme.

Okpomor assured that media practitioners in the region would continue to collaborate with IOCs, particularly Chevron, in the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
