Management of Brotherhood Model College, Calabar, celebrates the World Menstrual Hygiene Day to sensitize its female students on the benefits of menstrual hygiene/possible health measures and the myths and misconception of menstruation.
Declaring the event open, the school principal, Her Eminence Tari Puje, thanked God for the enablement to mark the event, saying the initiative is to sensitize and educate our girl child and women out there on poor menstrual health and hygiene undercut, and remove the stigma associated with menstrual health and hygiene.
She mentioned that as part of the event, over 1000 free sanitary products would be distributed to all our girl children in demonstration of the power and beauty of being a woman.
Speaking on the theme: Together For A Period Friendly World” during a seminar presentation, the branch health coordinator of Nigeria Red Cross Society, Cross River State, Mrs Gertrude Usani, sensitize the students and other participants on the myths and misconception of menstruation and menstrual hygiene.
She reminded the students of the need to eschew the stigma behind menstrual health and appreciate the benefits as a woman.
Also, a resource person from Mother Elizabeth Medicare Centre, Nurse Fullness Matthew, educated the students on the “benefits, challenges and health measures” associated with menstrual hygiene.
She cautioned the girl child on the early management of their menstrual cycle from puberty, thereby maintaining proper disposal of menstrual products before and after use.
The presenter also disclosed that some challenges behind menstrual hygiene include: Cultural taboos, myths and beliefs, embarrassment and anxiety, and lack of timely sensitization, among others.
Other guests who spoke at the event were: the Executive Secretary, Calabar South Local Education Authority, Supervisor for Education Calabar South; Dr. Arit Dan Omini, and the International President Universal Mercy Fellowship; Matriarch Christ Shepherd, Ronke Aluko.
The event also featured intriguing performances by BROMCO students and other invited schools. The event was well attended by guests and other invited schools, students, as well as BROMCO staff.
